Unit 2: The Externally Set Task
I have chosen Edges as my theme for the Externally Set Task.
I have an idea for this task, which involves shadows. I will take an object and place it on some paper somewhere it will cast a long shadow. I will paint the areas that are shaded black, then wait for the shadow to change, then take the picture. It will look as if there is two shadows, and it will put emphasis on the black-on-white of the shaded paper, with the colour of the object breaking the image down the middle. |
Research
Laura Letinsky
Website Link
Laura Letinsky is a contemporary photographer from Canada. She focuses mainly on still-life images, and the relationship between the subject and the background. I find her work very interesting, because I like the minimalist idea of an all-white image, with a splash of colour on the subject. |

Jed Devine
Website Link
Jed Devine is a photographer from Mount Kisco, New York. His work focuses on the edges of objects on other objects, and the shadows between them. I especially like his work which involves teacups stacked on top of one another, as the edges of the cups provide odd angles and inclines. |

Jan Groover
Website Link
Jan Groover was a photographer from Plainfield, New Jersey. Her work utilised the reflective surfaces of kitchen utensils(cutlery, pots, etc.) to create interesting images with many intriguing angles and edges. |

László Moholy-Nagy
Website Link
László Moholy-Nagy was a photographer and painter from Bácsborsód, Hungary. He is most famous for his work with photograms, making interesting images with nothing more than a few odds and ends, situated in such a way to make an image. He would often move the object during exposure, giving a two-layer effect to the image. |

Image Analysis
My Photography
My Favourite Image
This is my favourite image of the ones in the gallery above. I like the warm colour scheme, with the rich orange-brown of the wood, with the subtle pink of the wall. The reason the scheme is orange-based is because the floor of the Art Department is bright orange, which affects the lighting in the room. The lights are also subtle yellow, because they are fluorescent. The different shades on the wood create a lot of lines in the image, and give it a cool and almost futuristic look, a contrast to the traditional feel of the wooden easel. The low angle of the shot reveals the underside of certain parts of the subject

My Second Set
My second batch of images is closely inspired by the work of Jed Devine, in which he stacked cups on top of one another to emphasise the edges created by the overlapping rims. His work also seems to focus on the odd angles that come out of stacking the cups. To achieve the white background, I used the studio at school, and I used the Tungsten Light White Balance setting on the camera to counter the yellow light from the studio's lights.

Final Evaluation
For this unit, I chose the theme of Edges, because throughout my studies of photography I have had a seemingly unconscious interest in straight lines. I have enjoyed working with edges, and I believe I have grown quite good at working with them.
